In December of 1969, John Lennon and Yoko Ono broadcast a simple statement around the world: War is Over (if you want it)! Simple, bold, black letters were printed against a white background and posted on billboards in England, Germany, Japan, Canada, Italy, and the United States. The words, although subtle and unassuming, spoke clearly to the heart of the matter: war is an unnecessary evil. Nearly forty years later, after the bitter tragedy of the Vietnam War, we find ourselves wrapped tightly in the barbed wire reality of the Iraq War. More than 4,000 Americans have died; tens of thousands more have been injured. The U.S. government spends 720 million dollars per day to fund its activities in Iraq alone, yet they cry out for more spending. When will it stop? When we say enough!
THE WAR IS OVER is a multi-media community arts celebration event that will take place at the Providence Black Rep on January 19, 2009 in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Produced by Just A Step Productions (JASP), THE WAR IS OVER intends to create a public space where the idea of peace as an imperative, not an alternative, will be promoted. Community organizations, artists, community leaders, and local businesses will come together to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.
